Grundstötning, in maritime usage, refers to the incident when a vessel unintentionally makes contact with the seabed, shoal, or submerged obstruction during navigation. It ranges from light scraping to severe hull damage and can occur in oceans, seas, rivers, or coastal areas. The term is commonly used in Swedish-language maritime literature and is equivalent to “grounding” or “running aground” in English.

Causes include navigation errors, inaccuracies in charts or depth data, shallow water, strong currents or tides, reduced visibility, pilotage lapses, mechanical failures, or automated navigation systems misreporting depth. Environmental factors such as congestion in straits, narrow channels, or ice can increase risk.

Immediate risks include hull damage, water ingress, fuel or oil leaks, loss of propulsion or steering, potential capsizing, and environmental hazards such as pollution or damage to underwater infrastructure. If grounding occurs in sensitive ecosystems, rescue and salvage operations can be complicated by weather and sea state.

Prevention focuses on careful voyage planning using up-to-date nautical charts, depth soundings, and risk assessments; maintaining adequate under-keel clearance; speed management; use of pilots and tugs in shallow or constrained waters; real-time depth monitoring and warnings; and adherence to traffic schemes and weather forecasts.

Response measures begin with ensuring crew safety, conducting damage assessment, and stabilizing the vessel. Refloating may be attempted through ballast adjustments, dewatering, and tug assistance. In many jurisdictions, salvage rights and liability depend on local laws and insurance terms, while environmental response plans may be activated to contain and remediate pollution.
