Narratives, slogans, and symbols help disseminate the ideology and align member behavior.

Group ideologies influence behavior by guiding collective action, recruitment, and resource mobilization. They help justify actions to insiders and outsiders and shape attitudes toward rival groups. While they can foster cohesion and coordinated effort, they can also promote dogmatism, exclusion, or coercive tactics when power is centralized or when disagreement is stigmatized.

Scholars study groupsideologies using surveys, discourse and content analysis, ethnography, and network approaches to track origins, diffusion, and conflicts with other groups. They examine how ideologies interact with institutions, media environments, and social inequalities. Critics warn that focusing on group-level beliefs risks obscuring individual variation, while supporters argue that group-level analysis illuminates patterns of collective behavior and policy preferences.
