In the imagined materials, grossirons consist of ferromagnetic iron-rich cores encased in glassy silica shells, forming hollow to solid spheroidal aggregates. The concept is used to explain unusual magnetic anomalies and mechanical properties attributed to certain extraterrestrial or laboratory-synthesized materials.

Origin of the term: The name grossiron derives from fictional usage; introduced in late 21st century science fiction and later adopted in speculative literature to describe these iron-rich particles.
