Grondwassen, commonly referred to as soil washing, is a remediation technique for contaminated soil that uses water-based washing to separate pollutants from soil particles. The cleaned soil fraction can often be reused, while the contaminant-bearing fraction is treated or disposed of separately. Grondwassen can be applied as an ex-situ process (soil is excavated and treated above ground) and, in some designs, as an in-situ approach using flushing to mobilize contaminants within the soil.
