Grommeting is the process of installing grommets, which are typically metal or plastic rings used to reinforce holes in various materials. These holes are often found in fabrics, leather, canvas, or plastic sheeting. The primary purpose of grommeting is to prevent the material from tearing or fraying around the reinforced opening.

The installation of a grommet usually involves two parts: a grommet barrel and a washer. The barrel is inserted through the hole in the material, and the washer is placed on the other side. The edges of the barrel are then crimped or pressed, folding over the washer and securely fastening both pieces to the material. This creates a durable and smooth edge for the hole, which can then be used for lacing, fastening, or hanging.

Grommets are used in a wide range of applications. In apparel and accessories, they are found in shoes, belts, bags, and clothing like eyelets for lacing. In industrial settings, grommeted tarps are common for securing loads or creating temporary shelters.
