griddet

Griddet is a term used in discussions of grid-based data representation to denote a family of encoding schemes that partition two-dimensional data into discrete cells on a regular grid and annotate each cell with a compact set of detail descriptors. The coinage combines "grid" and "detail" and appears mainly in speculative, experimental, or research contexts rather than in official standards.

In a griddet model, data are organized into a two-dimensional array of cells. Each cell contains a lightweight payload—such as a color sample, elevation value, or texture statistic—plus a small vector of detail coefficients or metadata that describe local variation or fidelity.

Rendering and processing typically proceed by iterating over the grid, selectively decoding cells to achieve progressive transmission or scalable rendering. By increasing the level of detail per cell or refining grid resolution, the overall fidelity can be improved without re-encoding the entire dataset.

Usage and status: Griddet remains primarily a conceptual framework found in academic discussions and prototype software. It has not been standardized and has limited real-world adoption, though it informs debates on grid-based compression, streaming of large spatial textures, and tiled GIS workflows.
