Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, often abbreviated as G-CSF, is a cytokine that plays a crucial role in the production of granulocytes, a type of white blood cell. These cells are essential components of the immune system, particularly in defending the body against bacterial and fungal infections. G-CSF is primarily produced by the bone marrow and other tissues, acting on hematopoietic stem cells to stimulate their differentiation and proliferation into neutrophil progenitor cells. It then further promotes the maturation of these progenitor cells into mature neutrophils, which are then released into the bloodstream.

The therapeutic use of G-CSF has revolutionized the management of several medical conditions. Recombinant G-CSF is widely administered to patients undergoing chemotherapy, which often suppresses bone marrow function and leads to a dangerous drop in neutrophil counts (neutropenia). By boosting neutrophil production, G-CSF helps to reduce the risk and severity of infections in these individuals. It is also used in patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation to accelerate the recovery of neutrophil counts and in individuals with certain chronic neutropenic disorders.
