Grammophones, known as grammofoner in several European languages, are devices designed to play back sound that has been recorded onto flat discs made of shellac, vinyl, or similar materials. They represent the consumer-facing evolution of early sound recording technologies, emphasizing mechanical reproduction and acoustic amplification, though later models incorporated electrical amplification.

The development of gramophone technology began in the late 19th century with the rise of disc records as a mass-produced medium. Emile Berliner played a key role in popularizing flat discs as an alternative to cylinder-based formats. In Europe, the term gramophone became common for the playback device, while in the United States the term phonograph was widely used. By the early 20th century, mass production and standardized speeds helped popularize home listening.

Mechanism and design: Early gramophones operated purely acoustically. A stylus traces grooves in a spinning disc, driving a diaphragm that resonates through a horn to produce sound. From the 1920s onward, electric motors and electrical amplification increased volume and fidelity, later allowing the use of external speakers. Standard disc formats evolved, with common shellac discs at speeds such as 78 rpm; later formats introduced vinyl and slower or faster speeds, including 33 1/3 rpm and 45 rpm for longer-playing and single recordings, respectively.

Legacy: Grammophones were central to home entertainment in the first half of the 20th century and influenced music distribution and consumer electronics. They gradually declined with the rise of magnetic tape, compact discs, and digital formats, though antique gramophones remain valued by collectors and museums for their historical and cultural significance.
