Gradienttiedessä is a Finnish-language term used in discussions of gradient fields and gradient-based dynamics. The expression, roughly translated as "in the gradient," is employed to describe states or analyses that follow or examine the direction of greatest increase in a scalar field.

In mathematics, gradienttiedessä refers to the study of gradient fields ∇f and the trajectories they define. The gradient flow describes how a point x evolves under x′(t) = −∇f(x). Critical points occur where ∇f = 0, and their stability relates to the curvature of f. The concept also encompasses the geometric view of gradient lines, which are curves that locally align with the gradient direction and reveal how function values change along space.
