Governance refers to the processes of decision-making and the processes by which decisions are implemented or not implemented. It encompasses how individuals and institutions acquire and exercise authority, fulfill their responsibilities, and reach agreements. Governance is a broad concept that can apply to various levels, from the global stage to individual organizations and even family units.

At its core, governance involves the establishment of rules, policies, and structures that guide behavior and interactions. Effective governance aims to promote fairness, accountability, transparency, and responsiveness. It often involves a combination of formal mechanisms, such as laws and regulations, and informal practices, such as customs and norms.

Different contexts utilize distinct forms of governance. Public governance, for instance, deals with the management of public affairs and the provision of public services by governments and their agencies. Corporate governance focuses on the systems and principles by which a company is directed and controlled, involving the relationships between management, the board of directors, shareholders, and other stakeholders. Non-profit organizations also have their own governance structures to ensure they fulfill their missions effectively and ethically.

Key elements often associated with good governance include participation, where citizens or stakeholders have a voice in decision-making; the rule of law, ensuring legal frameworks are applied impartially; transparency, making processes and decisions open to scrutiny; responsiveness, meeting the needs of stakeholders; consensus-orientation, considering different viewpoints to reach broad agreement; equity and inclusiveness, ensuring all members of society feel valued and have opportunities; and effectiveness and efficiency, ensuring that processes yield desired results with the optimal use of resources.
