Glykogeenillä is the Finnish word for glycogen. Glycogen is a polysaccharide that serves as the primary form of glucose storage in animals and fungi. It is a branched polymer of glucose units, meaning it is made up of many glucose molecules linked together in a chain with numerous side branches. This structure is important for its function, allowing for rapid breakdown and release of glucose when energy is needed.

In humans and other animals, glycogen is primarily stored in the liver and muscles. Liver glycogen plays a crucial role in maintaining blood glucose homeostasis. When blood sugar levels drop, the liver breaks down glycogen into glucose and releases it into the bloodstream to provide energy for the body. Muscle glycogen, on the other hand, is used as an immediate energy source for muscle activity. It is not released into the bloodstream but rather utilized directly by the muscle cells.

The synthesis of glycogen is called glycogenesis, and its breakdown is called glycogenolysis. These processes are tightly regulated by hormones like insulin and glucagon, which respond to changes in blood glucose levels. When glucose is abundant, insulin promotes glycogenesis, while during periods of fasting or exercise, glucagon stimulates glycogenolysis.

Disorders of glycogen metabolism, known as glycogen storage diseases, can occur due to genetic defects in the enzymes involved in glycogen synthesis or breakdown. These diseases can lead to various health problems depending on the specific enzyme affected and the tissues involved.
