Glomerulonephritis is a term that describes a group of kidney diseases characterized by inflammation of the glomeruli. The glomeruli are tiny filters in the kidneys responsible for removing excess fluid and waste products from the blood and returning cleaned blood to the body. When glomeruli become inflamed or damaged, they are unable to perform their filtering function effectively, leading to the presence of blood and protein in the urine, and potentially reduced kidney function.

This condition can manifest in several ways. Acute glomerulonephritis often develops suddenly, sometimes following an infection such as a strep throat. Symptoms may include edema (swelling), particularly in the legs and feet, high blood pressure, and changes in urine color, such as rust-colored or foamy urine. Chronic glomerulonephritis, on the other hand, progresses more gradually over many years and may not cause noticeable symptoms until significant kidney damage has occurred.

The causes of glomerulonephritis are diverse and can include infections, autoimmune diseases like lupus or IgA nephropathy, and certain genetic conditions. Treatment strategies depend on the underlying cause and severity of the disease. They may involve managing blood pressure, reducing protein in the urine through medication, and addressing the specific cause if it's an infection or autoimmune disorder. In severe cases, dialysis or a kidney transplant might be necessary. Early diagnosis and management are crucial to preserving kidney function and preventing long-term complications.
