Glianeuron is a theoretical cell type proposed in neuroscience to describe a unit that blends neuronal excitability with glial support functions. The term combines glia and neuron, reflecting the proposed dual heritage. In this concept, a glianeuron would participate in electrical signaling while also carrying out glial roles such as maintaining extracellular ion balance, clearing neurotransmitters, providing metabolic support, and modulating local blood flow.

In proposed models, glianeurons could be resident within neural circuits as integrated signaling units, potentially forming specialized processes that resemble both neuronal synapses and glial endfeet. They might exhibit ion channels typical of neurons and express transporters and receptors typical of astrocytes or oligodendrocyte lineage, enabling bidirectional communication with neurons and glia.

Research status and implications: Currently, glianeurons are hypothetical and not established as a distinct cell type in mammalian brains. Critics note difficulty distinguishing them from known glia-neuron interfaces such as tripartite synapses. If real, glianeurons could advance understanding of neuroglial interactions and inspire new approaches to neurodegenerative disease, cognitive enhancement, or bioelectronic interfaces.
