Glaskonsten, or glass art, refers to the art and craft of working with glass to produce decorative objects, functional wares, and sculptural works. It encompasses both industrial production and artistic experimentation, with a strong tradition in Sweden's design and craft culture. The term often evokes the country’s renowned glassmaking region and its long-standing collaboration between designers and manufacturers.

Historically, Sweden developed a prolific glass industry from the 18th century onward, particularly in Småland. The region is associated with a group of glassworks in towns such as Kosta, Orrefors, and Boda, forming what is commonly called Glasriket – the Kingdom of Glass. Through the 19th and 20th centuries, Swedish glassmakers merged traditional techniques with innovation, contributing to a distinctive Nordic design language. The mid-20th century studio-glass movement helped elevate glaskonsten to international prominence, blending craft sensibility with visionary design.

Techniques used in glaskonsten include glassblowing, mould pressing, casting, and lampworking for shaping, as well as surface decoration such as engraving, cutting, etching, enameling, and glass fusing or slumping. Cold working, polishing, and finishing are also important. Many Swedish artists work across studio settings and industrial production, creating both limited-edition pieces and broadly produced wares for homes, museums, and public spaces.

Today, the Glasriket region remains a focal point of glaskonsten, with brands such as Orrefors and Kosta Boda continuing to influence contemporary glass design. The field attracts designers, artists, and visitors, reflecting Sweden’s enduring appreciation of glass as both art and everyday object.
