Glasfibern is a term used to describe glass fiber materials, including both reinforcement fibers for composites and silica-based optical fibers. It denotes thin strands of glass manufactured for high strength-to-weight ratios and for transmitting light in fiber-optic systems. In composite engineering, glasfibern refers to glass fiber reinforcement embedded in polymer matrices, usually in the form of rovings, mats, or fabrics, which improve stiffness, strength, and durability.

Manufacture and composition: Glasfibern filaments are drawn from molten glass, commonly silica-based formulations, and coated with a sizing to improve handling and adhesion to resins. The diameters for reinforcement fibers typically range from 9 to 25 micrometers. Optical glasfibern consist of a core and cladding arrangement that guides light and typically have a standard outer diameter around 125 micrometers, with smaller core diameters used for data transmission.

Properties: Glass fibers exhibit high tensile strength, good stiffness, low density, and excellent chemical resistance. They perform well at elevated temperatures and in fatigue-prone applications when used as reinforcement. However, glasfibern can be brittle and susceptible to surface damage; performance is highly dependent on fiber quality, resin compatibility, and fiber orientation. Protective coatings and proper processing reduce handling damage and improve interface strength with matrices.

Applications: Glasfibern is used across industries as reinforcement in glass fiber-reinforced polymers for automotive, aerospace, wind energy, construction, and sporting goods. Optical glasfibern form the backbone of fiber-optic communication, sensing systems, and high-speed data networks, where low loss and high bandwidth are essential.

Safety and environmental: Processing glass fibers can generate fine dust, so appropriate protective equipment and ventilation are recommended. Recycling options include reuse of fiber-reinforced composites and appropriate disposal according to material regulations.
