Glaceringtechniek, often shortened to glacering, is a decorative ceramic glazing technique. It involves applying a thin, translucent, and often iridescent glaze to a fired ceramic piece. The characteristic effect of glacering is a surface that appears to shimmer or glow, creating a subtle, ethereal appearance. This is typically achieved by using glazes with specific compositions that allow for controlled crystallization or metallic oxide reactions during a subsequent firing.

The process usually begins with a bisqueware or previously glazed and fired ceramic object. A specially formulated glaze, often containing materials like tin, bismuth, or specific metal oxides, is applied. This glaze is typically thinner than standard ceramic glazes. The piece is then fired in a kiln under carefully controlled atmospheric conditions. The specific temperature, duration, and atmosphere (whether oxidizing or reducing) are crucial for developing the desired iridescent or crystalline effects. High firing temperatures are often employed.

Glacering can be applied over various base glazes or directly onto unglazed bisque. The translucent nature of the glaze allows the underlying color or texture to show through, adding depth to the decoration. The iridescent quality is often a result of microscopic crystalline structures forming on the glaze surface or the formation of thin, light-refracting metallic films. This technique is appreciated for its delicate and luminous decorative qualities, often found in artistic and studio pottery.
