Gjenitivedativ is a linguistic term used to describe phenomena involving the genitive and dative cases in languages that retain or have historically retained explicit case marking. The name combines the Norwegian words for genitive (gjenitiv) and dative (dativ). It is not a single, fixed phenomenon, but a label applied to patterns in which genitive and dative forms interact, influence one another, or converge in morphology or usage.

In practice, gjenitivedativ can refer to several patterns. One is the use of a single ending or construction to express both possession and indirect object functions. Another is diachronic change in which dative forms spread to genitive contexts through analogy, blurring the boundary between the two cases. A third pattern involves syntactic configurations where possessive phrases are built with oblique case marking or prepositional strategies that substitute for a distinct genitive form. The term is most often discussed in historical and comparative linguistics, rather than in contemporary standardized grammars.

Historical and regional context is important.
