Gypsum plaster is used for finishes and decorative work, while gypsum boards consist of a gypsum core encased in paper or fiberglass facing. Additives such as fibers, retardants, or water repellents are often included to modify setting, strength, or performance.

Key properties include light weight, good fire resistance, sound insulation, and ease of finishing. They tend to be sensitive to moisture and can be degraded by prolonged water exposure, though special variants improve moisture resistance. Workability is high, with quick setting and relatively low cost. Gypsum-based products are often used in interior construction for walls and ceilings, but the family also extends to decorative plasters and certain medical or dental applications.

Manufacturing and sustainability involve sourcing natural gypsum ore or synthetic gypsum, calcination, grinding, and shaping into boards or plaster products. Gypsum waste can be recycled back into gypsum products or other cementitious materials, contributing to a lower environmental footprint relative to some alternative binders. Safety considerations focus on dust control during handling and cutting.
