Giktbehandling is the medical management of gout, a form of inflammatory arthritis characterized by sudden and severe pain, redness, and swelling in joints, predominantly affecting the big toe. Gout results from the accumulation of uric acid crystals within joint tissues, which can occur due to overproduction or insufficient excretion of uric acid.

The primary goal of giktbehandling is to alleviate acute attacks, prevent future flare-ups, and reduce the risk of joint damage. Acute attacks are typically managed with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), colchicine, or corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and pain. Rest, elevation of the affected joint, and ice application are also recommended to ease symptoms.

Long-term management focuses on lowering serum urate levels to prevent crystal formation. Lifestyle modifications are essential components and include dietary changes such as reducing intake of purine-rich foods (like red meat and seafood), limiting alcohol consumption, and maintaining adequate hydration. Weight loss and regular exercise are also advised.

Medications used for urate-lowering therapy include xanthine oxidase inhibitors, such as allopurinol and febuxostat, which reduce uric acid production, and uricosuric agents like probenecid that enhance uric acid excretion. In some cases, pegloticase, a biologic enzyme, is used for refractory gout.

Monitoring uric acid levels, kidney function, and overall health is important in managing gout effectively. An individualized treatment plan, often involving both pharmacological and lifestyle measures, is essential to control symptoms, improve quality of life, and prevent joint damage.
