Giappone, the country known as Japan in English, is referred to in Italian as “Giappone” and its inhabitants are called “giapponesi”. The term is used in everyday Italian to denote Japanese people, language, art or cultural products. It functions similarly to the English adjective “Japanese” and can be combined with nouns, such as “cucina giapponese” (Japanese cuisine) or “letteratura giapponese” (Japanese literature).

The Italian word derives from the French “Japon” and the Latin “Japōnēs”, which stem from older Chinese pronunciations of “Japan”. The suffix –ese, common in Italian for nationality adjectives, was added in the 17th century when Italian scholars adopted the term. The same adjective appears in other Romance languages, e.g., “japonés” in Spanish and “japonês” in Portuguese.

In terms of demographic presence, Italian communities are relatively small in Japan, numbering only a few thousand people. However, the number of Japanese residents working and studying in Italy has grown significantly, especially after the 1989 economic boom and subsequent educational exchanges. Giappone has had a notable influence on Italian culture, particularly in design, fashion, and contemporary arts. Italian designers often collaborate with Japanese partners, exemplified by the partnership between the fashion house Armani and Japanese retailer Zara. Japanese aesthetics such as minimalism and the concept of “wabi‑sabi” have also inspired Italian interior designers and chefs.

Today, “giapponesi” remains a standard term in Italian media, academia, and everyday conversation. It reflects the growing interconnectedness between Italy and Japan across business, tourism, education, and the arts, and continues to be used in contexts ranging from culinary reviews to diplomatic reports.
