Georeferents are points or features that carry precise geographic coordinates within a defined coordinate reference system. They serve as anchors that allow raster or vector data to be positioned in the real world, enabling accurate spatial analysis and map overlay. Georeferents are essential when source data lacks an explicit geographic framework or when aligning datasets from different sources.

Common examples of georeferents include ground control points established by land surveying, GPS-derived coordinates, known benchmarks, and recognizable landmarks with published positions. In many workflows, a subset of georeferents is identified in the dataset, and their coordinates are used to compute a spatial transformation that aligns the data to a target coordinate reference system. Transformations can be affine, polynomial, projective, or more complex, depending on the distortion present in the source data.

Accuracy assessment is an important aspect of using georeferents. The quality of the georeferencing is often reported as an error metric, such as RMSE, and depends on the number, geometry, and distribution of georeferents, as well as the precision of the coordinate measurements and the appropriateness of the chosen transformation.

Georeferents are widely used in GIS, remote sensing, and cartography for georeferencing historical maps, aerial photographs, satellite imagery, and other spatial data. They help ensure that different datasets can be integrated reliably, though poor selection or measurement of georeferents can lead to misalignment and erroneous analyses.
