Geography is the science that studies the places and the relationships between people and their environments. It analyzes the distribution of phenomena across the Earth's surface, the spatial patterns of physical features, habitats, and ecosystems, as well as the ways in which human societies shape and are shaped by space.

Geography is commonly divided into physical geography, which examines landforms, climates, soils, water bodies, and biogeography, and human geography, which focuses on cultures, economies, politics, urban development, and population dynamics. Geographers use qualitative and quantitative methods, mapping, fieldwork, and increasingly geospatial technologies such as geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and GPS to describe and model spatial relations.

Historically, geography developed from early exploration and cartography. Classical geographers described Earth’s surfaces; later scholars like Alexander von Humboldt and Carl Ritter integrated natural and human aspects. The 20th century saw the quantitative revolution and the rise of specialized subfields; contemporary geography emphasizes interdisciplinarity, critical perspectives, and issues of place, scale, and identity.

Applications of geography include urban planning, resource management, disaster risk reduction, environmental monitoring, transportation networks, and climate research. By merging spatial thinking with empirical data, geography helps explain how places differ, why spaces matter, and how human and natural systems interact across scales, from local neighborhoods to global processes.
