Genlakering is a finishing technique in which one or more fresh coats of lacquer are applied over an existing lacquer layer to refresh appearance and restore surface protection. The practice is used in furniture restoration, musical instrument finishing, automotive refinishing, and decorative woodwork, where preserving the underlying structure is important while improving gloss, color depth, and wear resistance.

The process typically involves assessing the existing finish, cleaning, and lightly sanding to create adhesion. Damaged areas may be repaired or stripped only as needed. A compatible lacquer system is chosen, and thin, even coats are applied by spray or brush, with adequate drying time between coats. A final leveling, wet-sanding, or polishing step may be used to achieve the desired gloss and smoothness. Temperature and humidity are controlled to reduce defects such as solvent lift or peeling.

Materials and finish options vary, including solvent-based and water-based lacquers such as nitrocellulose, acrylic, or polyurethane formulations. Primers or sealers may be used to improve adhesion and color consistency. The choice of gloss level—high, satin, or matte—depends on the project and the existing surface.
