Generatív is a term derived from Latin and used in Hungarian to mean generative. In academic contexts it describes theories, models, or systems that generate data, structures, or behavior according to a defined set of rules or learned distributions. The concept appears prominently in linguistics, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence.

In linguistics, generative grammar is a framework associated with Noam Chomsky that seeks to describe the implicit knowledge underlying language. It posits that a finite set of grammatical rules and transformations can generate the infinite variety of sentences in a language. Early work distinguished deep structure from surface structure and introduced transformational rules; later developments evolved into minimalist and other programmatic approaches that aim to explain language with as few principles as possible. Generative perspectives emphasize competence over performance, seeking abstract representations of linguistic knowledge.

In statistics and machine learning, generative models attempt to learn the joint distribution of observed data and latent variables. They can generate new samples from the learned distribution and are used for density estimation, unsupervised learning, and data synthesis. Classic examples include Gaussian mixture models, hidden Markov models, and more recent neural approaches such as variational autoencoders and generative adversarial networks. These models contrast with discriminative models, which focus on modeling conditional relationships.

In contemporary Hungarian usage, generatív remains a common way to describe generative grammars, generative models, or generative AI systems that create text, images, or other media. The term encompasses both formal rule-based approaches and data-driven generative methods across disciplines.
