Generalprobe is a term used in German-speaking performing arts to denote the final full-dress rehearsal before a premiere. During a generalprobe, the production is performed with the complete cast, orchestra or ensemble, full sets, costumes, lighting, and sound cues, and all technical elements are exercised as they will be during the actual performance. The objective is to run through the work in near-final form and to verify timing, cues, transitions, and coordination across departments.

The term contrasts with more sectional rehearsals, simply called "Proben," which focus on specific scenes, numbers, or technical components without requiring a complete, polished performance. Generalproben are typically scheduled in the days or hours leading up to the opening night. In some productions, the generalprobe is held without a public audience; in others, a Generalprobe mit Publikum is used to test acoustics, pacing, and audience experience.

In practice, a generalprobe serves as a final quality check, enabling last-minute adjustments to direction, staging, lighting design, sound balance, and costumes. For performers, it’s also a chance to integrate all elements into the timing and emotional arc of the piece, ideally producing a seamless rendition suitable for the premiere.
