History of gemwork traces ancient origins in the Near East and the Mediterranean, with advances in cut and polish evolving through the Renaissance and into modern diamond-cutting centers. The 20th century brought synthetic gems and precision equipment that broadened techniques and accessibility.

Techniques and tools include evaluating rough material, cleaving or sawing, forming the final shape, and refining the cut through faceting or polishing. Setting techniques include bezels, prongs, channels, pavé, and inlays. Tools such as grinding laps, polishing laps, diamond abrasives, gravers, and setting pliers are commonly used. Workplaces emphasize dust control, ventilation, and careful handling of fragile stones.

Materials used in gemwork include natural gemstones (diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, opals), pearls, and other minerals, along with synthetic gems and simulants.
