Gelijkareaal is a Dutch term that translates to "equal area" in English. It is primarily used in cartography and geography to describe a specific type of map projection. A map projection is a method of representing the curved surface of the Earth on a flat surface, and this process inevitably involves distortion.

Gelijkareaal projections aim to preserve the relative sizes of landmasses and bodies of water. This means that while the shapes of continents and countries might be distorted, their areas will be accurately represented in proportion to each other on the map. This is in contrast to conformal projections, which prioritize preserving angles and shapes, often at the expense of area accuracy.

The main advantage of using a gelijkareaal projection is its ability to accurately compare the sizes of different regions. This makes them particularly useful for thematic maps that depict population density, resource distribution, or political boundaries where accurate area representation is crucial for interpretation.
