Gaxetas are mechanical seals used to prevent the leakage of fluids or gases at the interface between two mating surfaces. Gaxetas are widely used in plumbing, automotive engines, industrial equipment, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. They come in numerous shapes and can be flat sheets cut to shape, ring types such as O-ring equivalents, or more complex geometries like spiral-wound or metal gaxetas.

Common materials include elastomeric polymers such as nitrile rubber (NBR), fluorocarbon (FKM or Viton), silicone, and neoprene, as well as PTFE and metal or composite constructions. The choice of material depends on operating temperature, pressure, and chemical compatibility with the fluids or gases involved. Design considerations also include the surface finish of the mating parts, gasket thickness, and the intended clamping force or torque to avoid over-compression or extrusion.

Manufacturing methods vary by type and material, including stamping, die-cutting, molding, or machining to produce gaxetas in the required shapes and sizes. Proper handling and installation are essential to ensure performance; over-tightening, uneven seating, or damaged seating surfaces can compromise the seal.

In operation, gaxetas require inspection for signs of degradation, compression set, cracking, or leaks. They are typically replaced during maintenance or after disassembly of joints to maintain system integrity.
