Gasutvinning refers to the process of extracting natural gas from underground reservoirs. Natural gas is primarily composed of methane and is a fossil fuel used for heating, electricity generation, and as a feedstock for various industrial processes. The extraction of natural gas typically involves drilling wells into formations where gas has accumulated over millions of years. These formations can be conventional reservoirs, where gas is trapped in porous and permeable rock, or unconventional reservoirs, such as shale gas or coalbed methane.

Conventional gas extraction involves drilling a wellbore and then completing it to allow the gas to flow to the surface. This may involve perforating the well casing at the reservoir depth. For unconventional gas, more advanced techniques are often employed. Hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as fracking, is a method used to increase the permeability of low-permeability rock formations, allowing gas to be released. This involves injecting a fluid mixture of water, sand, and chemicals at high pressure into the well. Another method for unconventional gas is horizontal drilling, which allows a wellbore to be extended laterally within the gas-bearing formation, increasing the contact area.

Once extracted, the raw natural gas is transported to processing facilities where impurities such as water, carbon dioxide, and sulfur compounds are removed. This purification process is essential to meet pipeline specifications and for safety. The processed natural gas is then typically transported to consumers via a network of pipelines. The economics and environmental impact of gasutvinning are subjects of ongoing discussion and research, with considerations including greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and land disturbance.
