Gassveising, also known as gas welding, is a manual welding process that uses a fuel gas and an oxidizer to create a flame for melting and joining metals. The method is widely used in various industries, including construction, automotive repair, and metal fabrication, due to its simplicity and versatility.

The most common type of gas welding is oxy-fuel welding, which combines oxygen with a fuel gas such as acetylene, propane, or natural gas. When these gases are mixed in the correct proportions and ignited, they produce a high-temperature flame capable of melting metal. Acetylene is frequently used because it generates the hottest flame, reaching temperatures up to 3,300°C (6,000°F), making it suitable for welding thicker materials.

The process begins by attaching a welding torch to hoses connected to cylinders of oxygen and fuel gas. The operator adjusts the flow of gases to achieve the desired flame type—neutral, oxidizing, or reducing—depending on the metal being welded. A neutral flame, which has equal parts fuel and oxygen, is typically used for most applications, including steel and cast iron.

Gassveising requires skill in controlling the flame, manipulating the filler metal, and maintaining proper joint alignment. The welder melts the base metal and adds filler metal, which cools and fuses to create a strong bond. Proper technique is essential to avoid defects such as porosity, excessive spatter, or weak joints.

While gas welding is less automated than modern processes like MIG or TIG welding, it remains valuable for tasks requiring precision, such as repair work, artistic metalwork, or welding non-ferrous metals like copper and brass. Safety precautions, including proper ventilation, fire protection, and personal protective equipment (PPE), are critical due to the open flame and potential hazards of gas cylinders.

Despite its limitations, gassveising continues to be a foundational skill in welding education and a practical method for many applications. Its simplicity and effectiveness make it a reliable choice for both beginners and experienced welders.
