Gasskipti, or gaslighting, is a form of psychological manipulation in which a person or group causes another person to doubt their own memory, perception, or understanding of events. The term originates from a 1930s play and subsequent film in which a partner systematically manipulated the protagonist to cast doubt on her reality. In everyday use, gasskipti describes repeated behavior intended to make someone question their sanity or judgment.

Common tactics include denying that certain events occurred, presenting false information as if it were true, trivializing or belittling the victim’s feelings, and manipulating the environment to create confusion. Gaslighters may project blame, reframe mistakes as the victim’s fault, or isolate the target from friends and sources of support. Over time, the behavior aims to undermine the victim’s confidence in their own memory and perception, creating dependency on the gaslighter.

Gasskipti occurs in various relationships, including intimate partnerships, family dynamics, workplaces, and institutions. It is often part of broader emotional abuse and power imbalances. The effects can be severe and include anxiety, depression, memory distortions, reduced self-esteem, sleep disturbances, and difficulty making decisions. The damage can be long-lasting if the abuse continues or recurs over time.

Recognizing gasskipti involves identifying repeated patterns of denial, manipulation, and control aimed at making one doubt their reality. Responses include documenting incidents, seeking support from trusted people, setting firm boundaries, and, when needed, consulting mental health professionals or legal/advocacy resources.
