Gasocentraler is a term of Swedish origin that translates to "gas power plants" or "gas power stations." These are facilities that generate electricity by burning natural gas, biogas, or other gaseous fuels. Gas power plants are a significant component of many electricity grids worldwide due to their flexibility, efficiency, and relatively lower emissions compared to coal-fired power plants.

There are several types of gas power plants. Combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants are the most common and efficient. In a CCGT plant, natural gas is burned to drive a gas turbine, which in turn generates electricity. The hot exhaust gases from the gas turbine are then used to produce steam, which drives a steam turbine to generate additional electricity. This "combined cycle" approach significantly increases the overall efficiency of the plant. Open cycle gas turbines, also known as simple cycle plants, use the gas turbine alone to generate electricity and are often used for peak demand periods due to their quick start-up times.

Gas power plants offer several advantages. They can be brought online and taken offline relatively quickly, making them suitable for balancing the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. They also produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon dioxide, and significantly fewer air pollutants like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides compared to traditional fossil fuel power plants. However, they still rely on fossil fuels and contribute to climate change. The sustainability of gas power plants is a subject of ongoing debate, with a focus on transitioning to biogas or hydrogen as cleaner alternatives.
