Gasifies is the third-person singular present tense of gasify, meaning to convert a substance into gas. In energy and industrial contexts, gasification refers to converting carbon-containing materials into a gaseous mixture called synthesis gas or syngas, composed mainly of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, with carbon dioxide and methane as byproducts. The conversion occurs at high temperatures in a controlled oxidant-deficient or partially oxidizing environment, often using air, oxygen, or steam. The process is typically endothermic and requires heat input, which in many designs is supplied by partial oxidation of part of the feedstock.

Feedstocks include coal, biomass such as wood or agricultural residues, municipal solid waste, and certain plastics. Gasification enables energy recovery and chemical production from materials that are not easily burned directly. The technology is implemented through different reactor types. Fixed-bed gasifiers operate with a packed bed, with updraft or downdraft flow. Fluidized-bed gasifiers maintain a suspended bed with solid particles that behave like a fluid. Entrained-flow gasifiers push fines at high temperatures and pressures.

The primary gas product is syngas, which after cleanup can be used to generate electricity in gasification-based power plants, especially integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plants. It can also be converted into chemicals through Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, methanol production, or hydrogen generation. When coupled with carbon capture, gasification can facilitate lower-emission energy and fuel production.

Advantages include fuel flexibility, the potential for higher efficiency and waste reduction, and easier handling of contaminants. Challenges encompass tar and contaminant formation, ash management, equipment costs, and the need for sophisticated gas-cleanup and feedstock pretreatment. Research continues to improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and expand feedstock options.
