Gangrýna is a medical condition characterized by the death of body tissue. It occurs when blood supply to an area of the body is severely interrupted, either due to injury, disease, or a lack of blood flow. Without adequate blood supply, tissues are deprived of oxygen and nutrients, leading to cell death.

There are several types of gangrene. Dry gangrene typically affects extremities like fingers, toes, or limbs and develops slowly as circulation diminishes. The affected area becomes dry, shriveled, and dark. Wet gangrene, on the other hand, occurs in internal organs or moist body areas and develops rapidly. It is often associated with infection, causing the tissue to swell, become moist, and emit a foul odor. Gas gangrene is a specific type caused by bacteria that produce gas within the damaged tissue. This form is particularly dangerous and progresses very quickly.

Risk factors for developing gangrene include diabetes, peripheral artery disease, smoking, obesity, and conditions that impair circulation. Symptoms can vary depending on the type but may include pain, numbness, skin discoloration (pale, red, blue, or black), a cold sensation in the affected limb, and a foul odor.

Treatment for gangrene aims to stop the spread of the condition, remove dead tissue, and address the underlying cause. This often involves surgery to debride or remove the necrotic tissue. Antibiotics are used to treat infections, especially in cases of wet or gas gangrene. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may also be employed. In severe cases, amputation of the affected limb might be necessary to save the patient's life.
