Galvanizování is the process of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron to prevent rusting. This is achieved by immersing the metal in a molten zinc bath. The zinc reacts with the iron or steel to form a series of alloys, creating a strong metallurgical bond. This coating acts as a sacrificial barrier, meaning that if the coating is scratched and the base metal is exposed, the zinc will corrode preferentially, protecting the iron or steel from rusting.

There are several methods for galvanizing. Hot-dip galvanizing is the most common, involving dipping the fabricated steel or iron into a bath of molten zinc at a temperature of around 450°C. Other methods include electrogalvanizing, where a thin layer of zinc is deposited onto the metal using an electric current, and mechanical galvanizing, which uses centrifugal force to ensure even coating.

The thickness and uniformity of the zinc coating are crucial for its effectiveness. Different galvanizing processes yield varying coating thicknesses, which in turn dictate the expected service life of the galvanized product. Galvanizing is widely used in construction, automotive manufacturing, and for everyday items like fencing, nails, and screws due to its cost-effectiveness and durability. It significantly extends the lifespan of steel and iron products by preventing corrosion.
