Fötunarkvæðingar are a form of Old Norse poetry, often translated as "fate poems" or "lay of fate." These poems are characterized by their focus on the concept of fate, or *örlög* in Old Norse, and its inexorable power over individuals and the cosmos. While not a rigidly defined genre with strict metrical rules, they share thematic elements and a somber, often fatalistic, tone.

The most prominent example of a fötunarkvæði is the Völuspá, a central poem in the Poetic Edda. Völuspá recites the history of the world from creation to its eventual destruction and rebirth, all as foretold by a seeress (völva). Other poems that touch upon similar themes of destiny and unavoidable outcomes can also be loosely categorized as fötunarkvæðingar. These poems often depict gods and humans alike subject to the threads of fate, highlighting a worldview where even divine beings cannot escape their predetermined destinies. The cyclical nature of existence, the inevitability of death, and the eventual Ragnarök are common motifs. The language is typically stark and evocative, contributing to the powerful and often melancholic atmosphere of these poetic works.
