Förmaksmyokardiet refers to inflammation of the atrial myocardium, the muscle tissue of the heart's upper chambers. This condition can be caused by a variety of factors, including viral infections, autoimmune diseases, and certain medications. While often associated with more generalized myocarditis, it can also occur in isolation.

Symptoms of förmaksmyokardiet can vary but commonly include palpitations, shortness of breath, and chest discomfort. In some cases, individuals may experience fatigue or dizziness. The inflammation can disrupt the electrical signals that control the heart's rhythm, potentially leading to arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, electrocardiogram (ECG), and sometimes echocardiography or cardiac MRI to assess the heart's structure and function. Blood tests may be used to identify underlying causes like infections or inflammatory markers.

Treatment for förmaksmyokardiet depends on the underlying cause and the severity of symptoms. If an infection is identified, antiviral or antibiotic medications may be prescribed. For autoimmune-related inflammation, immunosuppressive drugs might be used. Medications to manage arrhythmias, such as beta-blockers or antiarrhythmics, are often employed. In most cases, förmaksmyokardiet resolves with appropriate treatment, though persistent arrhythmias or other complications can occur in some individuals. Rest and avoidance of strenuous activity are usually recommended during the recovery period.
