Fókusztávolsága is the Hungarian term for focal length. Focal length is a fundamental property of an optical lens, including those used in cameras. It is defined as the distance from the optical center of the lens to the focal point, where parallel rays of light converge after passing through the lens. This distance is typically measured in millimeters.

In photography, focal length plays a crucial role in determining the angle of view and magnification of an image. Lenses with shorter focal lengths (wide-angle lenses) capture a wider field of view, making them suitable for landscapes or architectural photography where you want to include a lot in the frame. Conversely, lenses with longer focal lengths (telephoto lenses) have a narrower field of view and magnify distant subjects, making them ideal for wildlife or sports photography.

The focal length of a lens dictates how much of a scene is captured. A wider focal length includes more of the scene, while a narrower focal length zooms in on a smaller portion. This relationship is inversely proportional to the angle of view. Standard lenses, often considered to be around 50mm on a 35mm film or full-frame digital camera, offer a perspective that is roughly similar to human vision.
