Fékdugattyú, often translated as brake caliper piston, is a crucial component in hydraulic braking systems, particularly in disc brakes. Its primary function is to transmit the hydraulic pressure generated by the brake master cylinder to the brake pads. When the driver applies the brake pedal, this action pushes fluid through the brake lines. The pressurized fluid then enters the brake caliper, where it acts upon the fékdugattyú.

Typically made of steel or aluminum, the fékdugattyú is a cylindrical component housed within the brake caliper. It is usually sealed with rubber boots and O-rings to prevent the ingress of dirt and moisture, and to retain the brake fluid. As the hydraulic pressure increases, the fékdugattyú is forced outwards, pushing one or both brake pads against the rotating brake rotor. This friction between the pads and the rotor is what slows down and stops the vehicle.

In single-piston designs, the fékdugattyú pushes one brake pad, which then presses against the rotor, causing the opposing pad to be forced against the rotor by the caliper housing itself. Multi-piston calipers, which are common in higher-performance vehicles, utilize multiple fékdugattyús, often on both sides of the caliper, to apply more even and forceful pressure to the brake pads. The condition and proper functioning of the fékdugattyú are essential for effective braking performance and overall vehicle safety. Wear or damage to the fékdugattyú or its seals can lead to reduced braking power, fluid leaks, and potential brake failure.
