fusering

Fusering is a term used in some technical discussions to describe the process of creating a bond between materials by locally inducing fusion at their interface. There is no single, widely accepted definition, and the meaning of fusering can vary between disciplines; it is not a standard term in major reference works.

In practice, fusering typically involves applying energy to the interface—by laser, electric resistance, ultrasonic energy, or heated tooling—so that the surface materials soften or melt and fuse as the heat is removed. The resulting joint can be a weld or a fused seam, depending on materials and processing conditions. Common implementations include laser-assisted fusing of polymers, ultrasonic welding of plastics, and heat-assisted joining of metals or composites.

Applications include rapid prototyping, lightweight structural joining, and the assembly of microdevices, where localized fusion minimizes distortion and enables complex geometries. Advantages include fast processing and strong, bonded joints; challenges include controlling heat-affected zones, achieving material compatibility, and ensuring reproducible bond quality. Safety concerns focus on high temperatures, fumes from heated materials, and energy use.
