Funktionær is a Danish term used to describe a salaried employee who performs professional, administrative, or technical work, typically in a white-collar role. The term is used for both public-sector civil servants and private-sector staff, and it stands in contrast to manual or blue-collar workers.

The word derives from the idea of performing a function or official duty. Historically, Danish society distinguished between funktionærer and arbejdere (workers), a distinction that played a significant role in the development of early labor movements and social classification. Today, the term remains common in everyday language and in legal and administrative contexts, though the practical differences between categories have evolved.

In Denmark, the relationship between a functionary and an employer is largely governed by a specific body of employment law. The Funktionærloven, or the Danish Salaried Employees Act, sets minimum terms for employment relationships, including notice periods, dismissal rules, salary-related protections, and certain benefits. The act primarily covers salaried employees in administrative, technical, or professional functions, with some exemptions defined by the law.
