Funktionssäker or functional safety refers to the ability of a system or component to operate within defined limits under defined conditions, preventing catastrophic failure. It is a critical aspect of system design in many industries, including automotive, aerospace, industrial automation, and medical devices. The goal of functional safety is to protect people and the environment from hazards arising from the failure of electrical, electronic, or programmable electronic systems.

Specific industry standards, like ISO 26262 for automotive or IEC 61511 for process industries, build upon this foundation. Achieving functional safety involves a systematic approach that includes hazard identification, risk analysis, definition of safety requirements, design and implementation of safety measures, verification, and validation. This often entails the use of redundant components, diverse technologies, and rigorous testing procedures to ensure that failures are either prevented or mitigated to an acceptable level. The effectiveness of functional safety measures is measured by their ability to reduce the probability of hazardous events occurring.
