Function nouns are a proposed class of nouns that encode function or role rather than a concrete referent. They name what an object or process is for, or the part it plays in a larger system. In this sense they are distinct from content nouns that denote tangible objects or stable concepts.

Common candidates include function, purpose, use, role, goal, and objective, along with derivatives such as the function of X. They appear widely in technical and cognitive discourse. In everyday language they are often paired with of-phrases: “the function of a device,” “the role of a valve in a circuit.” Some nouns, like use or purpose, may be countable or mass depending on context.

Morphology and syntax: Function nouns can form noun phrases headed by the noun itself, and may take determiners: “a function,” “the main function.” They can be modified by adjectives and by relative clauses, and may govern of-phrases to specify scope or domain: “the function of X in Y.”

Cross-linguistic and theoretical notes: Some languages encode function-roles with specific nominalizations or with case-marked constructions. In theory, function nouns are sometimes treated as grammaticalized aspects of lexical semantics, or as a bridge between lexical meaning and discourse structuring.

Applications and debate: The utility of the label varies by field. In design, engineering, and information modeling, function nouns help describe intended behavior or role-based specifications. Critics argue the category overlaps with general nominalization and is not always distinct from other abstract nouns, making definition context-dependent.
