fuktkälla

Fuktkälla is a Swedish term that refers to a source of moisture, i.e., any factor that introduces or sustains dampness in a building or material. The word combines fukt (moisture) and källa (source). In practice, fuktkälla is used in building physics, construction, and property maintenance to describe activities or conditions that cause increased humidity or wet conditions.

Common fuktkällor include leaks from roofs, gutters, plumbing, or irrigation systems; infiltration of moisture through walls, foundations, or basements; groundwater ingress; condensation caused by temperature differences or high indoor humidity; and flooding or excessive rain ingress. Inadequate ventilation and poor moisture management can also act as fuktkällor by allowing humidity to accumulate.

Assessment and identification involve visual inspection, moisture measurements of surfaces and materials, and relative humidity monitoring. Tools such as moisture meters, hygrometers, and infrared cameras are used to locate damp areas and estimate the extent of moisture uptake. Early detection is important to prevent secondary damage such as mold growth, wood rot, or structural deterioration.

Mitigation focuses on eliminating or reducing the moisture source and improving moisture control. Actions may include repairing leaks and drainage, sealing joints and penetrations, improving ventilation and air exchange, installing vapor barriers and insulation, and using dehumidification where appropriate. Proper maintenance and timely repairs are essential to minimize long-term damage and preserve indoor air quality.
