Fuktgräns, often translated as moisture limit or water content limit, is a fundamental concept in soil mechanics and civil engineering. It refers to the specific water content at which a soil transitions between different states of behavior. Understanding fuktgräns is crucial for predicting how soil will behave under load, its permeability, and its susceptibility to frost heave or shrinkage.

The most common fuktgräns discussed is the plastic limit (PL). This is the water content below which a soil will crumble when rolled into a thin thread about 3 mm in diameter. Above the plastic limit, the soil becomes plastic and can be molded without breaking. The liquid limit (LL) is another important fuktgräns, representing the water content at which a soil changes from a plastic state to a liquid state. At the liquid limit, a soil will flow under a very slight pressure. The difference between the liquid limit and the plastic limit is known as the plasticity index (PI).

Soils with a high PI are considered plastic, while those with a low or zero PI are non-plastic. The fuktgräns values are determined through standardized laboratory tests, such as the Casagrande liquid limit test and the cone penetrometer test for the plastic limit. These values are essential for soil classification systems and for designing foundations, retaining walls, and other geotechnical structures.
