Frontnessbackness refers to the horizontal dimension of tongue position during articulation, indicating how far forward or backward the tongue body is placed in the oral cavity. It is a major dimension of vowel quality, often described together with height (high–low) and rounding. Vowels are commonly categorized as front, central, or back according to their frontness.

Articulatorily, front vowels are produced with the tongue body raised toward the hard palate (anterior portion of the mouth), while back vowels use posterior tongue positions toward the soft palate or velum. Central vowels lie between these regions. In phonological analyses the feature is often encoded as anterior/back (or [+anterior]/[-anterior]) and interacts with rounding in the overall vowel system.

Acoustically, frontness influences the second formant (F2) spectrum: front vowels have higher F2 values than back vowels, while height affects the first formant (F1). The combination of F1 and F2 codes the perceived vowel quality.

Typologically, frontness/backness contrasts are found in many languages and underpin vowel harmony patterns in several language families. For example, Turkish and Finnish-like systems use backness to condition suffix vowels, with front vowels triggering front suffixes and back vowels triggering back suffixes; rounding can interact as well. English and other Germanic languages contrast front and back vowels, as in pit versus put, but often with more complex vowel inventories.

In phonology, frontness/backness is treated as a primary articulatory parameter, and while most discussion centers on vowels, related concepts sometimes extend to consonants in terms of place of articulation or palatalization. The term thus summarizes a key aspect of vowel articulation and perception across languages.
