Freespooling refers to a mechanism in fishing reels that allows the spool to rotate freely in the opposite direction of line payout. This is primarily found in baitcasting reels and some spinning reels. When the reel is in freespool mode, the drag system is disengaged, permitting line to be pulled out by a fish or cast without any resistance from the reel's internal components, except for the slight tension from the spool bearings.

The primary purpose of freespooling is to enable long-distance casting by reducing friction. It also allows anglers to present bait naturally to wary fish, as there is no tension on the line when the bait hits the water. Another key application is when setting the hook, particularly with techniques that require a quick and powerful hookset. By disengaging the reel handle or a dedicated freespool lever, the angler can quickly gain line without the initial resistance of the spool turning.

However, it is crucial to engage the reel's gearing and reel in the freespool mode to prevent backlash, which is an uncontrolled spool rotation that results in line tangles.
