Fotoöregedéséhez is a Hungarian term that translates to "photoaging" in English. It refers to the premature aging of the skin caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. This type of aging is distinct from intrinsic aging, which is a natural, genetic process that occurs over time.

The primary culprits behind photoaging are UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, damaging collagen and elastin fibers, which are essential for maintaining skin's firmness and elasticity. This damage leads to wrinkles, sagging, and a leathery texture. UVB rays primarily affect the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, causing sunburn, hyperpigmentation (dark spots), and increasing the risk of skin cancer.

Visible signs of photoaging include fine lines and wrinkles, particularly in sun-exposed areas like the face, neck, chest, and hands. Other common indicators are uneven skin tone, age spots (solar lentigines), telangiectasias (spider veins), and a loss of skin firmness. The skin may also appear dry, rough, and less smooth.

Preventing photoaging involves consistent and diligent sun protection. This includes wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily, seeking shade during peak sun hours, wearing protective clothing such as hats and long sleeves, and avoiding tanning beds. Early and consistent application of these measures can significantly reduce the development of photoaging signs and promote healthier, more youthful-looking skin over time.
