A fototypsætningsmaskine, also known as a phototypesetting machine or phototypesetter, was a piece of equipment used in the printing industry. It played a crucial role in the transition from traditional metal typesetting to modern digital methods. The machine worked by using light to expose characters onto a photographic film or paper. This film or paper then served as the master image for the printing plates.

In operation, a keyboard operator would input text, much like a typewriter. This input would then be processed by the machine, which would select the appropriate character from a matrix or font store. A light source would then illuminate the chosen character, projecting it through a lens system onto the photosensitive material. The film or paper, once exposed, would be developed, creating a negative or positive image of the typeset text. This image could then be used to create offset printing plates.

Fototypsætningsmaskiner offered significant advantages over earlier hot metal typesetting methods. They were generally faster, quieter, and produced sharper, more consistent results. They also eliminated the need for molten lead, making the process safer and cleaner. While they represented a considerable advancement, phototypesetting machines were eventually superseded by fully digital typesetting systems that used computers and laser printers or imagesetters. These later technologies offered even greater flexibility and efficiency.
