A fotomaskilter, or phototool, is a high-resolution photographic plate or film used in photolithography to transfer a pattern onto a substrate. These patterns are typically microscopic and are essential for the manufacturing of integrated circuits, flat-panel displays, and other microelectronic devices.

The process of creating a fotomaskilter involves a computer-aided design (CAD) file that describes the desired pattern. This digital design is then used to expose a light-sensitive material on a glass or quartz substrate. The exposure can be done using lasers or electron beams, depending on the required resolution. After exposure, the plate is developed, creating a stencil-like pattern where some areas are transparent to light and others are opaque.

During photolithography, the fotomaskilter is placed over a substrate coated with a photosensitive material called photoresist. Light is then shone through the mask. The light passes through the transparent areas of the mask and exposes the photoresist beneath, while the opaque areas block the light, leaving that part of the photoresist unexposed. The exposed or unexposed photoresist is then chemically removed, leaving a pattern on the substrate that mirrors the design on the fotomaskilter. This patterned substrate can then undergo further processing, such as etching or deposition, to build up the desired electronic components. The accuracy and defect-free nature of the fotomaskilter are critical for the successful production of microelectronic devices.
